What is Value/Value Contrast?

The Art and Design term for light and dark. Value shows the differences between one or more colors.The relationship between areas of light and dark.. For example the picture below shows the values of gray.

Value Pattern
The arrangement and the amount of variation in light and dark, independent of any colors used.

Value Empahsis
high contrast in one area and subdued contrast elsewhere so you can get the viewer to concentrate on a certain object. The picture below shows value empahsis because the lighter background brings out the main object/figure which is the model because she is dark.

What is Chiaroscuro?
A drawing using only line is very effective in showing shapes. It uses light to produce depth.

What is Stillness?

Stillness is when action is frozen.

1. Figure Cropped: By cropping a part of a figure you express motion.

Chapter 10: Illusion of Space

What is the Picture Plane?

 The point of visual contact between the viewer and the picture and is conceived as a major structural element in the production of abstract or illusionistic forms. In basic forms, it can be any picture that is flat with invisible vertical lines. Often times being able to cut the picture into rectangles.

What is Foreshortening?

It is when a part of a design or object is going towards you, away from you or just up.

What is Amplified Perspective?

A view that occurs when an object or item is pointed at the viewer.

How to use Size Relationships to achive Space.

Size difference conforms with our understanding of how we perceive space. Size can be used to show importance of an object whether big or small. For example the picture below illustrates that the enlarge girl in the front is the center of the piece. Because she is so much bigger than the background people, it shows her importance.

Vertical Location is when an object is placed higher to create depth in a picture.

Chapter 9: Pattern and Texture!

Pattern and Texture is most likely my favorite chapter! Pattern and Texture will bring life to your design whether it's simple or extravagant!

Let's get started!

 

What is Pattern?

Pattern is a repeated decorative desing; reoccuring.

For instance, the picture below represents a pattern because of the repeating dots. Patterns can be anything! Look outside, repeating trees, cars, mailboxes, they are all considered patterns.

 

What is Texture and why does it differ from Pattern?

Texture amd Pattern are very closely related. The differemce is, texture is something you can FEEL but texture is also repetitive therefore the design could be called a pattern. You can identify if its a texture by touching. For example, the picture below is texture because if you touch it, you would know it is snake skin.

What is Tactile Texture?

Texture you can actually feel!

 For example the picture on the left, it is only implied that you can feel it because it looks a certain way. It is only a photo so if you touch it, you wont actually feel the texture. The brick picture is a Verisimilitude pictue meaning it can create the impression of texture on a flat, smooth surface also known as a Visual Texture. The picture on the right is an example of tactile texture because YOU CAN actually feel it.

Trompe l'oeil is when a picture completely copies every texture like pattern related to the actual object. Top left picture is also a perfect example for it.

 

 

What is a Collage?

A designed made up of different materials pasted onto or next to one another.

A collage in fashion is also considere what you wear. Simply because when we dress up, we tend to layer things and add accessories... making our outfit a collage!

What is a Shape?

A shape is performed when it defines an element.

What is Biomorphic Shapes?

Natural shapes that refer to natural and organic forms. These shapes basically look like big blobs or bubbles pertaining to a natural form. Notice that the pictue above shows natural growth without giving away what it is exactly.

 

Examples and Differences between Naturalism, Idealism, and Distortion.

 

1. Naturalism: gives a true life visual appearence of shapes in the world.

The picture below shows naturalism of the 18th century.

 

 

2. Idealism: It is a strive for perfection. It is the OPPOSITE of Naturalism because it shows our expectations and not the reality. For example, the picture below is catergorized under idealism because the world expects every woman to look/be like this.

3. Distortion: exaggerated shapes and munipulated proportions. For example, Sketch models!

 

 

What is a Non-Objective Shape?

Chapter 7: Line

What is a Line?

A line is a form with width and length, but no depth.

What are Implied Lines?

Implied Lines create a series of points that are connected automatically everytime you see them. The photo below shows implied lines on  the border lines of the neck and shoulders.

What are Psychic Lines?

There is no actual line but we have a feeling that certain design/objects connect without them even touching each other. For example, The picture below shows a woman covering her eyes from the sunlight. How do we know that the sunlight is what's bothering her? The direction of her hands towards the sun shows the relationship without a real line connecting them together.

What is the difference between Contour and Gesture Lines?

Contour and Gesture Lines are two types of drawing.

Contour Lines: When line is used to follow the edges of forms, to describe their outlines.

Gesture Lines: The importance in gesture drawing is showing the action of the design, not the shapes.(free flowing)

Chapter 6: Rhythm

What Is Rhythm in Design?

In basic terms, rhythem means movement; a flow of design.

Rhythm and Motion: connecting and flowing.

Alternating Rhythm is when a design or pattern is consistently alternating with one another to create a regular sequence.










What is Progressive Rhythm?

        Progressive rhythm involves repetition. It could be the repetition of shapes or a design that is progressing and/or deminishing by texture,color or value.

What Is Polyrhythmic Structures?

An overlay of different rhythmic patterns that make a complex result.
